History of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company, Inc.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company was organized on May 12, 1939. There were 25 members present, and the first officers for the new Auxiliary were elected at this meeting. The officers were:

President Mrs. Anna Street
Vice President Mrs. Agnes Shiroky
Secretary Mrs. Eva Listman
Treasurer Mrs. Josephine Urban

The Auxiliary's first monthly meeting was held soon thereafter on May 30, 1939, at which time by-laws were formulated and presented to the men for approval. Dues were set at ten cents per month and the ladies auxiliary kept the monies. Fifty percent of the profit from any events and all other monies were to be turned over to the Fire Company at the end of the year. The first event that the auxiliary sponsored was a strawberry festival. The cost of admission was twenty-five cents for adults and fifteen cents for children. By November the treasury had grown to $92.94.
The ladies have supported the men of Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company for almost 60 years, standing by the men through the hard times and the good times. In January 1943, the ladies decided not to have meetings until after the war. They gave the men fifty dollars out of the treasury to finish paying for the hall. It was not until May 10, 1945, that the ladies gathered together to discuss the reopening of the Ladies Auxiliary and restarted their support to the company. The Auxiliary always has and always will support the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company.
On September 5, 1945, the ladies joined the Ladies Auxiliary to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen's Association, and today the ladies still actively support the county association.
Words can not begin to explain or even tell of the fund raising events that the Ladies Auxiliary have supported over the years. These events number the thousands, and as written in our by-laws, all excess money is presented to the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company at the end of the Year.
The Auxiliary has seen many of its members come and go, with all contributing to the foundation of the auxiliary. If not for the support of all the members, the Auxiliary could not have survived and would not have been prosperous.
Many changes and revisions to the by-laws have been made over the years. Although the dates of major fund raising events, election and installation of officers, time and night of meeting are not the same as they were fifty-nine years ago, the principal reason for having an auxiliary is still the same: To help others and to support the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company.
