Fire Escape Plan
Hopefully disaster will never effect you and your loved ones, but if it
does you should be prepared. One of the things that should be done to
prepare for disaster is to prepare a Fire Escape Plan. Below are five steps
that will help you prepare your own Fire Escape Plan.
- Step 1 - Floor Plan: Draw an outline of your home on a piece of graph
paper showing all bedrooms, doors, windows and stairs.
- Step 2 - Bedroom Inspections: Determine two ways out of each bedroom
area. The doorway would be the normal exit. The window would be an
emergency exit. However, in cases such as a highrise complex, the occupants
may not have an alternate exit from their rooms. These individuals should
close their air vents, stuff sheets under the door to keep smoke out and
slightly raise a window to allow fresh air inside. Test the windows and
screens to see if you and your child can open them. Purchase a chain escape
ladder for exit out of upstairs bedroom windows. Serious injury could
result from jumping.
- Step 3 - Meeting Place: The family should agree on an outside meeting
place in the event of a fire. This will ensure that everyone is safely
outside. Under NO circumstances should anyone re-enter a burning dwelling.
- Step 4 - Calling the fire department: Using a neighbors telephone call
the fire department. In Anne Arundel County Dial 911. Give the dispatcher
your name, address of the fire and the telephone number from where you are
calling.
- Step 5 - Prepardness: Hold regular fire drills with the entire family.
